With pockets full of cash, charisma and a preternatural memory for vintages, an unassuming young Rudy Kurniawan earned the reputation of a wine savant, surrounding himself with some of high society’s most fervent wine connoisseurs. Little did they know that he was pulling one of the most ingenious wine cons of our time. Sour Grapes documents the con, con man, and his victims.
Just before the 2008 collapse of the housing and stock market, the new millennium’s most prominent American dreamers— the hedge fund managers, real estate moguls, celebrities, tech entrepreneurs— were buying fine wine as if the bottles were mortgage-backed securities. This craze of the newly rich drove up prices and revolutionized the international wine market.
