“History hasn’t gotten here yet,” says King-Lu (Orion Lee) early in First Cow. After spending most of his young life exploring the world, the Chinese-born traveler sees his adopted new American home—specifically the Oregon Territory circa 1820, decades before the area was granted statehood—as a place where possibility outstrips precedent.
In this acclaimed drama that is generating Oscars buzz, a skilled cook (John Margaro) travels west and joins a group of fur trappers in the Oregon territory. Later, he finds true connection with King-Lu, who is also seeking his fortune. Soon, the two collaborate on a successful but risky food business that cements their friendship. Director Kelly Reichardt uses this powerful emotional core to explore her enduring themes of loyalty and devotion.
The Post Brewing Co. restaurants in Boulder, Lafayette, and Denver (Rosemont) will offer pre-ordered paired dinners for viewers to eat while watching the film. See Food, Glorious Food for dinner information.
Walter Chaw will introduce the film. A panel discussion with Orion Lee, Ken Albala, and Clay Fong will follow the showing.
Note: R Gallery in Boulder is showing an in-person and online exhibit of art by Colorado artists inspired by Festival films, including First Cow.
